HDF4 Mapping Project Update

The HDF4 Mapping Project, a collaboration between The HDF Group and NASA Earth Science Data Centers, was funded by NASA to further guarantee the long-term accessibility of EOS data stored in HDF4 files. The h4mapwriter utility creates an HDF4 File Content Map for a given HDF4 file. Each Content Map is an XML document that directly or indirectly (via offset/length information) provides access to content stored in the binary HDF4 file it maps. With this approach, relatively simple programs can read a Content Map and retrieve data from the corresponding HDF4 file without relying on the HDF4 library.

This presentation will give a brief introduction to HDF4 File Content Maps and the h4mapwriter utility, which was released in July, 2011. Use of HDF4 File Content Maps and recent activities regarding their verification will also be covered.
