In 1988, the HDF group began developing the Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois. With critical support from NASA and others, The HDF Group enjoyed success at NCSA for 18 years, creating and maintaining high quality open source software for steadily growing communities of scientists, engineers and others. The group left the University of Illinois in 2006 to become a non-profit corporation whose mission is to evolve HDF technologies in the face of increasing data challenges, to provide a high level of service to HDF users, and to ensure ongoing accessibility of HDF-stored data for the long term. Among its many challenges, The HDF Group must develop institutional and business models that can sustain it for the long term. In this address, Mike will tell the story of the HDF group, and will share his vision of the future for The HDF Group and for HDF technologies.
