The HDF Explorer is a GUI program that can visualize HDF4 and HDF5 files. This tool treats HDF-EOS files as general HDF files. It doesn't utilize HDF-EOS-specific information.
Installation is easy; users just need to click buttons following the installation wizard.
Users can view help contents from the menu. The GUI makes it convenient to open datasets and visualize them.
We used one HDF4 file from the NASA Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSMI) Sensor. One can download the file here . This tool can draw a plot over the surface; the fill value and coordinates are automatically and properly recognized as Figure 1 shows.
Longitude and latitude values appear in X-axis and Y-axis. Fill values are used over the Land area.
This tool can be used to access HDF-EOS2 and HDF-EOS5 files. However, this tool does not use the projection-related information in grid data and geo-location fields in swath data. Without this information, the plot lacks coordinate values as Figure 2 shows. The file we used is an AMSR-E AE_SI12 grid file from NSIDC. Users can download this file here.
Figure 3 shows a swath example. The file we used is an AMSR-E AE_Ocean swath file. You can download one file here.Unlike Figure 1, the numbers in X-axis and Y-axis of Figure 2 and Figure 3 are just indices; so, users need to guess geo-location information corresponding to this plot.
