Viewing the GeoTIFF Image

There are several tools that can access and display GeoTIFFexternal format image. Here we focus on the use of Global Mapper software tool to view a GeoTIFF image. Follow these simple steps to display the image of interest.

1. Download and install Global Mapper on your PC from hereexternal. It is an unregistered version but it provides sufficient functionality for our purpose.

2. When global mapper starts for the first time, you will see the respective window:

3. You would need to load the image/data you want to work with. To load the image:

You would see a window like: Press 'Yes' if you are working with the elevation data (i.e. DEM) or 'No' if you are working with the raster image data (i.e. aerial photo). Press 'No' to display our GeoTIFF images.

4. Once the data is loaded you will see the image on the main window.

5. If you want a grid over the image, you can:

You would see a window like: Check the Lat/Lon Grid option in the 'Grid Display' option under 'General' category.

6. Once the image is loaded, you can track the latitude and longitude readings on the map with the movement of the mouse over the image. The readings are displayed at the bottom right corner of the window.

7. Here are a couple of example images for Swath and Grid data. Notice the encircled latitude/longitude readings in the figure.

7.a. Swath figure

7.b. Grid (geographic) figure

This grid contains one grid called "MonthlyRainTotal_GeoGrid" and that's why TIFF file has a suffix. This convention applies to the above swath file, too.
